Wellness Week Project at St. Nathy's College, Ballaghadereen

‘Never underestimate the power of a quiet moment in the garden’ - Unknown

Marc Gaynor & Anita McNicholas from Homeland Ballaghaderreen gave Transition Year students at St. Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen a garden demo for Wellness week 2023. The group of 8 students and their teacher, Karen learned about the importance of having good soil conditions before planting edibles.

Together Anita, Marc and the students prepared some raised beds by adding Homeland Multipurpose Compost, mixed with poultry manure, ensuring it was level for planting. The Transition Year students planted greyhound cabbage, scallions, red onions, and butter head lettuce. Once all vegetables were planted the students scattered crushed oyster shells around the vegetable plugs to discourage slugs and snails before lightly watering so the plants could settle in.

We are looking forward to seeing how the vegetable patch progresses! Thank you to Karen and Transition Year at St. Nathy’s College for having us!
